The Veterinary Services Department is committed to ensuring animal health, food safety, and public health while supporting trade in animals and animal products.
Laboratory Services
Our 5 major modern laboratories (Central Veterinary Lab-Pong Tamale, Accra Veterinary Diagnotics and Research Labs, National Food Safety and AMR Lab – Accra, Kumasi, Ho and Takoradi Veterinary Labs), support disease surveillance, diagnostics, and research to enhance animal health and food safety. The Department also has some regional diagnostic Labs in Wa, Bolgatanga, Dormaa, Techiman and Cape Coast.
Food Safety & Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Monitoring
the department conduct laboratory testing to ensure the safety of animal-derived food products and monitor antimicrobial resistance to safeguard public health.

Diagnostics
We offer advanced diagnostic services to detect and confirm animal diseases, enabling timely interventions and effective disease management.
Vaccine Production
- The Department develop and produce high-quality vaccines to protect animals from infectious diseases. In Ghana, the Veterinary Services Department produces vaccines for major livestock and poultry diseases, including:
- I-2 Newcastle disease thermostable vaccine – (for poultry)
- Haemorrhagic Septicaemia Vaccine (for livestock)
- Anthrax Vaccine (for livestock)
- Blackleg Vaccine (for cattle)
Supportive diagnostics for public health
All the Veterinary Laboratories specially, Central, Accra, Takoradi and Ho Labs offer advanced diagnostic services to detect and confirm human diseases, enabling timely interventions and effective disease management in human to support the public health.
We provide the following clinical diagnostic services to the public:

Clinical Services
We provide professional veterinary care, including treatment, disease management, and preventive healthcare for livestock, companion animals, and working animals. Our clinical services ensure animal welfare and contribute to sustainable livestock production.
Trade and Regulation Services
We facilitate the safe and legal trade of animals and animal products by enforcing national and international regulations. Our services include:
Issuance of import and export permits
Inspection and certification of live animals and animal products
Regulation of veterinary pharmaceuticals and biologicals
Compliance monitoring with World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and other international standards
Veterinary Public Health Services
Our Veterinary Public Health division works to prevent and control zoonotic diseases (diseases that spread from animals to humans) through:
Meat inspection at slaughterhouses to ensure safe consumption
Monitoring hygiene standards in animal product processing facilities
Implementing rabies control and other zoonotic disease prevention programs
Wildlife Health Services
We oversee the health and welfare of wildlife species, ensuring disease surveillance, prevention, and management in protected areas, zoos, and wildlife reserves. This includes monitoring emerging zoonotic diseases and collaborating with conservation organizations to protect biodiversity in collaboration with the Veterinarian attached to Forestry Commission under Ministry of Land and Natural Resource.
